The management of Guaranty Trust Bank (GTB) has, on June 7, 2018, been ordered to pay Innocent Chukwuma, chairman and CEO of Innoson Group the sum of N14 billion within 14 days by the Supreme Court of Nigeria.
In a statement released on Thursday by Cornel Osigwe, Innoson Group’s head of corporate communications, the court struck the motion for stay of execution of the Enugu court of appeal division’s order that GT Bank pays N6 billion into an interest yielding account.

The Supreme Court decision follows GTBanks motion for stay of execution at the Supreme Court when the Court of Appeal Enugu Division ruled on 9th Dec, 2014 that the appellant (GTB) is hereby ordered to pay the sum of Five Billion, Nine Hundred and thirty Six Million, One Hundred and Twenty Six Thousand, Two Hundred and Nineteen Naira, One Kobo (N5,936,126,219.01k) to the Deputy Chief Register of the Court within 14 days from the date of ruling and which the Deputy Chief Register shall pay same into an interest yielding account in a reputable bank other than Diamond Bank or Mainstreet Bank Plc pending the determination of this appeal. The money together with whatever accrues thereon shall be paid to the party who wins the appeal.
GTBank not satisfied with the decision of the ruling of Court of Appeal, filed a motion for stay of execution at the Supreme Court, however Supreme Court today struck out GTB motion for stay of execution and maintained that it will not hear GTBank’s motion for stay of execution until it obeys the ruling of Court of Appeal to pay the said money into an interest yielding account.
By Supreme Court decision of June 7, 2018, GTB is expected within 14 days to pay the sum of over N14Billion judgment debt to the Deputy Chief Registrar of the Court of Appeal Enugu Division and which will now be paid into an interest yielding account in a reputable bank. The money together with whatever interest accrues thereon shall be paid to the party who wins the appeal.

The popular belief is that a true census of Igbo people on the planet is long overdue. As is well known, Igbo people occupy 100% of all five states of Southeastern Nigeria. The Igbo comprise no less than 60% of Delta and Rivers States in the South-South. There are significant numbers of the Igbo (up to 30%) in Abuja, Lagos, Bayelsia, Benue and Kogi States. In the rest of the 36 states of Nigeria, the Igbo constitutes no less that 15% of the population. Outside Nigeria, the Igbo, now referred to as Diaspora Igbo, make up significant proportions of populations in all continents of the world (Africa, The Americas, Eastern and Western Europe, Russia, Asia, the Pacific Realm etc.). They contribute to the wealth and well-being of their places of abode to the detriment of their homeland which beckons for their attention in the face of hostile and inclement ethno-political environment. Furthermore, the Igbo does not constitute a factor in the budgetary, demographic and political equations where they live just because nobody can say, with any reasonable certainty, the numbers of our people in the Diaspora. Consequently, a true census of the Igbo becomes the number one project for the Igbo Nation of today and tomorrow. Every onye Igbo at home and in the Diaspora needs to give maximum support in time, participation and resources to this project.
