Constitutional Authority

In keeping with ARTICLE XVI Section 16.1 of the WIC Constitution entitled Convention and Meetings, World Igbo Congress organizes an annual Convention of the Congress which is usually held on such date and venue as the Board of Directors shall specify. In practice, this convention is held during the Labor Day weekend. The Board of Directors tries as much as possible to rotate the venue of the Convention according to states in which its affiliates exist. Section 16.2 of the same constitution entitled Quorum requires that Sixty percent (60%) of the member organizations in good standing constitute a quorum at any meeting or conference during the Convention of the Congress. Also in keeping with ARTICLE VIII of the Constitution entitled House of Delegates meets jointly with the Board of Directors at the Convention of the Congress to discuss issues of concern to Ndigbo. Such meetings are usually preceded by “the Delegates Meeting” at least three (3) months before the Convention of the Congress to deliberate on such internal issues of concern to the House of Delegates and to pass “Resolutions” to be transmitted to the Board of Directors for approval.

In the last 5 years the conventions of the congress were held in Orlando FL in 2012 (Hosted by Igbo Association of Tampa Bay - IATB), in Dallas Texas 2013 (Hosted by Igbo Community Association of Nigeria, Dallas/Ft Worth - ICAN) and in Houston, TX 2014 (Hosted by the Igbo People’s Congress, Houston, TX - IPC) and in 2015 in Detroit, Michigan (Hosted by the Igbo Cultural Association of Michigan - ICAM). In 2016, the convention will hold in Queens, New York, NY to be hosted by Igbo Organization of New York, IONY. Please click the button below to visit the webpage.
